UNESCO – the United Nations educational, scientific and cultural organization – is now accepting proposals for its international lists of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity and good examples.
The opportunity to nominate cultural heritage has existed every year since Sweden signed the Convention for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage in 2011.
The list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity includes traditions, customs and practices that have been passed down from generation to generation, such as the previously inscribed Swedish-Norwegian metallurgical economy and the Nordic mud boat tradition.
The register of good examples The aim is to collect projects that serve as models for the preservation or promotion of intangible cultural heritage. Good examples previously included in the list are the storytelling traditions in Sagobygden in Kronoberg and the network of Nyckelharpan.
After the collection, the Institute of Languages and Folklore, together with a committee of experts, will carry out an assessment of the proposals, after which the government will decide which heritage sites from Sweden should be nominated.
In order to be nominated internationally, the cultural heritage must first be on the national list.
Proposals can be submitted via a form by March 31, 2026.
