This is a joke. The author is responsible for the opinions expressed in the text.

Actually, I’ve been coming here for a long time. Sometime in the mid-1990s, my wife and I were in Andalusia, and in an old-fashioned men’s clothing store in a small town I bought a gray striped hat for an old man.

I must have been around thirty and such a wallet was completely foreign to me until then. But then and there I thought, man, why not?

I also liked the cap. But something, perhaps just curiosity, soon caused me to break the thread that connected the hill to the screen and created the typical flattened shape.

When folded, the hat looked completely different, more like a train driver’s hat from the beginning of the last century. But even worse.

What I should have done then was Sew the screen back on. Instead, the hat ended up among the fez, the kufin, the straw hat, the knitted rasta hat, and all the other head coverings I had purchased on various trips.

Then some time ago it was winter and I couldn’t find my usual hat in the mess that still exists after a window renovation more than half a year ago.

It’s a nice hat that covers both ears and can be buttoned under the chin. It resembles a World War I aviator’s cap and, most importantly, it doesn’t smudge, unlike all the top hats I’ve always tried to avoid.

But now it was cold and I went outside. Then my wife reminded me that I had actually bought a new men’s hat in London not long ago. Made from checked tweed and has a throw attached to the peak with a snap fastener.

Not a real hat, but better than nothing, I thought and strolled out into the winter cold. And to my surprise, I found that the hat was really warm. Yes, to the point that it mattered less that the ears were still exposed.

Of course that’s not good for a thirty-degree Norrland winter, but I could now walk around on Stockholm’s icy streets and feel neatly wrapped in fur with a simple hat. Let it be wool. Yes, the fact is that my thin aviator hat has never been so noticeably warm, no matter how comprehensive it is.

And now I had time to become an old man, so it was only right. Clear on time.

Read other series by Nisse, for example about how Swedish party politics is moving these days.
