    “Is this thing on?”

    Director: Bradley Cooper.

Screenplay: Bradley Cooper, Will Arnett, Mark Chappell. Cast: Will Arnett, Laura Dern, Bradley Cooper, Ciarán Hinds and others. Duration: 2 hours 1 minute (children allowed). Language: English. Cinema premiere

Remember when director David O. Russell was at his best, making Three Kings, American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook – before he suddenly and inexplicably lost his talent and fell off the pedestal? I missed him.

The first half hour of “Is This Thing On?” I assume he was resurrected. There’s something special about how you’re drawn right into the first image. Tess (Laura Dern) bares her teeth in front of the mirror with a toothbrush and realizes that it’s over, while Alex (Will Arnett), rather diffusely in the background, doesn’t raise any objections in traditional male fashion, but doesn’t seem to agree either. “Some signs indicate that I have separated,” he says, when he suddenly finds himself standing in front of an audience in a basement bar, “as if I live in an empty apartment in the city and my wife and children don’t live there.”

That’s it too Something about how easily and reliably the story moves from one point to another feels familiar: sometimes in leaps and bounds, sometimes in just a few moments, but always with an unexpected twist.

The stakes drop when Russell’s favorite actor, Bradley Cooper, makes a comedic appearance as the couple’s friend, a happy, down-to-earth and thoroughly selfish supporting actor who seems to be surfing on the ride and money of his wife (the acerbic Andra Day). There must have been a magical talent exchange during Silver Linings Playbook, with Cooper playing a sensational lead role. After that, his director’s star rose and Russell’s star fell.

There is also something irresistible when hidden talents suddenly blossom.

A well written, It’s not every day that you see well-acted and rhythmically staged adult comedies. The love between Alex and Tess is palpable, their sons’ reactions are believable, the pair of friends keep the comedy alive and the open mic world feels experienced with good details, environments and characters. There is also something irresistible when hidden talents suddenly blossom. Alex is also surprised that his crisis turns into humor when he ends up on stage. Therapy as entertainment.

However, the magic wears off after a while. Class is sometimes neglected, as when our newly hatched, unshaven and wrinkled comedian suddenly buys a brand new public bus. Or when it turns out that the smoked-out artists’ masts are turned into houses with lakefront properties in Oyster Bay. Tangible allergens for an elite allergy sufferer audience. Something you should be aware of.

Not that wealthy people can’t have problems like everyone else, with everyday chaos, sexual delusions, aging crises and in-laws (Ciarán Hinds is responsible for some of the film’s most beautiful scenes). But since Alex is doing his first stand-up gig to avoid the fifteen dollar ticket price, it doesn’t seem like it was all that well thought out.

Towards the end, for exampleUnfortunately, with apps, even the lines lose their compressed resilience and become closer to the more standardized self-help language of the genre. You start to see how the sack needs to be tied up and you’ve seen it before, both in the TV series The Wonderful Mrs. Maisle and in the Meryl Streep comedy It’s Complicated.

Predictability can have its appeal in a romantic comedy, but Alex and Tess in particular were worthy of their own story. Or is it just me that wants Arnett to remain BoJack Horseman until death? Doing the cartoon horse part of your life must be a special curse. How can we ever wish him happiness when he is so deeply entertaining in a confused and depressed state?

See more. Three more films with Bradley Cooper: “The Hangover” (2009), “A Star is Born” (2018), “Maestro” (2022).
