The Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots meet in the final at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The show is one of the most watched in the US – last year it was watched by almost 124 million viewers. Half a minute of advertising exposure can cost SEK 80 million and the world’s biggest artists compete to appear in the extremely lavish half-time show.
This year Bad Bunny is making an appearance. The Puerto Rican is already making Super Bowl history before the show as he is the first solo artist and headliner to sing primarily in Spanish.
Recently I took Bad Bunny He took home three awards at the Grammys, including winning in the heavy Album of the Year category for “Debí tirar más fotos”. It is the first album in Spanish to win this category.
In a newly released halftime show trailer, Bad Bunny dances to his mega-hit “Baile unforgettablee,” so that’s the song fans can expect to hear during the 13-minute show. There may also be some of his other big hits, like “Tití me pregunto” and “DTMF”. American media also speculate that the show will be colorful and gigantic with more than 200 dancers on stage.
But Bad Bunny’s choice at the Super Bowl also caused reactions. While many applaud the NFL for choosing to highlight a Latino artist, this one in particular has sparked controversy. Bad Bunny has also repeatedly expressed his support for immigrants in the USA, which has led, among others, to a reaction from the conservative organization Turning Point USA. Parallel to the official show, they host an alternative halftime show, “The all-American halftime show”, with artist Kid Rock at the helm.
At a press conference last fall, NFL boss Roger Goodell responded to the criticism. He defended the choice of Bad Bunny, emphasizing that he is “one of the leading and most popular entertainers in the world.”
– I don’t think we’ve ever chosen an artist without receiving backlash or criticism. “It’s pretty hard to avoid when there are literally hundreds of millions of people watching,” he said.
