According to Ulf Kristersson (M), there is a great need for “good AI in Swedish”.
– This requires a high-quality Swedish language model, the Prime Minister said at a press conference on Friday.
The Swedish language model will be developed by researchers in collaboration with the Publishers’ Association, the Writers’ Association and Tidningsutgivarna, as well as media companies such as Bonnier News, Schibsted, SVT and SR.
The model is trained using public data, but also books and news articles from Swedish publishers, authors and media companies.
“With this project, we are setting the rules for how AI development will take place in the future, while respecting the rights of publishers and authors,” comments Mikaela Zabrodsky, CEO of the Publishers Association, in a press release.
Along with several others The publishers’ association has previously criticized the Royal Library’s government mandate to create Swedish language models, pointing out that there is a risk that the authors’ copyright will be ignored.
The idea of the new venture, which is partly funded by the Wallenberg Foundations, is that publishers, authors and news media should retain ownership of their data.
– We have worked hard to ensure that politicians understand why copyright must be respected in these contexts and are pleased that the government and opposition parties have listened and are now making it clear what applies, says Anja Gatu, president of the authors’ union, in a press release.
