Almost 1.3 million used cars were sold in 2025, which corresponds to 2024. In contrast, sales of used electric cars rose by over 42 percent – and now make up 7 percent of total sales.
More models and a more mature market are seen as the main reasons for the development.
– You just have to look back three years. The electric cars sold back then are now returning to the used market, where electrification is starting to take hold, says Daniel Odsberg, sales manager at Kvdbil.
Concerns about used electric car batteries have also eased after tests showed good reviews.
– With the big brands, we find that the battery capacity lasts almost longer than the case, so there is no challenge here.
The best-selling electric car Last year, Volkswagen’s ID.4 was sold around 7,300 times, followed by the Polestar 2 and Volvo’s XC40. But when it comes to car brands, Tesla leads the way with around 10,000 cars sold, Model Y and Model 3. This is despite the fact that Tesla had a difficult year with new car sales falling by almost 70 percent in 2025.
But at Kvdbil, Tesla was the best-selling electric car, notes Daniel Odsberg.
– There were no anomalies in sales, our sales are almost twice as large as Volkswagen’s. At the same time, we are seeing more and more brands entering the market as Tesla is no longer as market leader as before. In 2026, Tesla will probably no longer be the undisputed leader.

There will be an average decline of 8 percent in prices on the used market in 2025. The petrol engine recorded the largest decline with a decrease of 12 percent, followed by diesel with 9 percent. Sales of used petrol and diesel cars also fell by 5 and 3 percent, respectively, last year.
Electric cars and plug-in hybrids performed better than average, but was still down around 7 percent in price.
Daniel Odsberg expects that the market will continue to be characterized by price pressure, particularly for older fossil fuel cars, which is accompanied by increasing used stocks.
– As the consumer gains purchasing power, they tend to turn more towards selling new cars, which is good since we have a fairly outdated vehicle fleet.
Daniel Odsberg believes that a new targeted bonus for electric cars, which comes into force on March 18, could also boost sales of electric cars and put pressure on prices on the used market.
