Formally, the government’s announcement means that the energy market regulator (EI) must change its regulations. Electricity suppliers are no longer forced to introduce so-called electricity tariffs on January 1, 2027.
According to TT, EI’s rules must be lifted no later than June 30 this year.

Electricity tariffs are a special charge on the electricity network bill that depends on how much electricity is used at a given time. A short-term high power consumption, i.e. when many electrical devices are running at the same time, becomes more expensive.
The legislator’s idea is to distribute electricity consumption throughout the day and thus reduce the load.
But the fees have met with a lot of criticism, among other things because they are difficult to understand and apply differently across the country. Energy Minister Ebba Busch (KD) says they had completely “unreasonable consequences”.
Of the approximately 170 Swedish electricity network operators, around 30-50 have already introduced electricity tariffs, some for several years. According to the current EI rules, all companies must have introduced them by January 1, 2027 at the latest. There is an EU regulation in the background, but it does not specify a date.
Now there is no obligation to introduce electricity fees. Companies can still implement them voluntarily, but the government assumes that this will not be the case purely for “consumer policy”.
At the same time, the energy market regulator must examine whether demand for electricity tariffs can be reintroduced. This investigation must be completed by April 12 next year.
However, according to TT, the government does not want the design to look like it does today.
