From geriatric care, local care and property management to cultural work and entrepreneurial activities – for young people of middle and high school age, a few weeks of holiday work with the municipality often represents an important first line on their CV.
Most municipalities in the country offer holiday jobs or paid holiday internships. The way the positions are structured differs, both in terms of the permitted application age, the types of positions available and the level of salary.
When the municipalities’ application deadlines open and close vary greatly. Some municipalities such as Malmö, Vänersborg and Höganäs have opened their application portals until April, while others have already closed. In Västerås, Norrköping and Linköping, the application deadline for municipal summer jobs ended in mid-February.

In Gothenburg, young people did it You can apply for one of the municipality’s more than 5,000 summer jobs in 13 different areas until February 28th.
Felix Heimersson, labor market consultant with the city of Gothenburg, says the early application process is a way to ease an already busy spring.
– We are doing pretty solid preparatory work trying to identify young people with adaptation needs in order to find a suitable place.
He doesn’t think many people will miss the application deadline, and if late applications are received, there will be a strict policy that this is not allowed. According to Felix Heimersson, the problem with the application process happening so early is that there will be a lot of dropouts.
– Many have not clarified their vacation plans, and then there are many who decline when they receive an offer. Then we have to make a new match.
Fredrik Falkengren runs the website sommarjobb.me, a non-profit platform that coordinates information on private and municipal summer jobs. He says they receive at least 100 emails every year from young people who have missed their community’s application deadline for a summer job.
– The only thing we can do then is to contact the summer jobs coordinator in the community. But I guess 95 percent of the time there’s nothing you can do if you’re late, he says.
There are differences in how successfully different municipalities manage to reach young people with their job advertisements, says Fredrik Falkengren. In particular, he points out that the websites of some municipalities for summer jobs are not visible on Google.
– I don’t think a young person will search the church’s often quite large and complicated website if they don’t find it on the first page of search results.
